Emergence in organizations: the reflexive turn

"In this paper we explore the role and meaning of the concept of emergence in the study of organizations. A brief recount of the history of the concept of emergence illustrates a general failure to distinguish between the mechanisms of emergence present in systems comprised of simple material or biological agents and those associated with systems comprised of human actors. We argue that it is reasonable to expect that what can emerge changes as the fundamental characteristics of the agent changes. Human agents are distinctive in the ability to distinguish 'self' from 'other' and in so doing to reflexively interact with our environment. We examine the implications of this observation and propose the definition of distinct forms of emergence. If we are to understand organizations as emergent properties of change then we must understand the nature of emergence itself." - Christopher Goldspink and Robert Kay

Two new but related articles have been added to the articles page. One, published August 2010, looks at the values of the two political leaders in the current Australian election (based on a values analysis of their speeches). The second, published in 1999, details the theory which provided the inspiration behind part of the methodology used to analyse their speeches.

An AdRotator has been added to the banner section at the top of most pages of our website. The AdRotator creates a random display of banners of various organizations who are accredited to use the AVI. Clicking on any of the banners (apart from our own) will take you to their website.

Page Rationalization

Many of the pages at our website have been merged with others as tabbed sub-pages. As a result the site-map has been cut in half. This should greatly simplify navigation.

Updates: Values & Vision Page + About AVI Page

Our Values & Vision page has been updated to reflect the work the Key Affiliates are doing to transform the Minessence Group into a cooperative.
The About the AVI page has been updated with a change to the payment gateway. Previously a person was part way through the AVI process before having to pay. Now payment is made before starting the AVI process. While credit card payments remain available, the change now caters for delayed payments via e-cheque or bank.
Rona Lynn's article, A Literature Review Exploring Values Alignment as a Proactive Approach to Conflict Management, has been added to the Articles page.

eZine #38--The Genesis Effect Revisited was published 20 Jan, 2010. In it, Paul Chippendale discusses how Brian Hall's book, the Genesis Effect initiated the work of the Minessence Group 22 years ago. Ten Principles for working with values are enunciated--each principle links to a blog thread where you can discuss the principle in more detail with Paul.

Mirror Sites. So many organizations now depend on the AVI website, and it's support site (MissionControl), being available 24/7, that we've set up mirror websites in the UK.
Articles. More articles have been added to our articles page and some broken links have been repaired.
New AVI Reports. Value Mentors in conjunction the Minessence Group, have developed a web-based PDF format multi-page group report to replace the existing PC-based group report. Also, we are currently re-working the PC based values alignment report so it too can be web-based.

Creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson challenges the way we're educating our children. He champions a radical rethink of our school systems, to cultivate creativity and acknowledge multiple types of intelligence.

Students with restless minds and bodies -- far from being cultivated for their energy and curiosity -- are ignored or even stigmatized, with terrible consequences. "We are educating people out of their creativity," Robinson says.

This video is a must watch.

The latest Minessence eZine [published 13 March] features updated research on the global worldview shift which occurred after September 11, 2001.
May last year, saw the introduction of the first full AVI (A Values Inventory) online. It can be produced at our website as a 70 page PDF document immediately a person has finished their responses to the AVI's value-laden statements.
Since May 2008 many additional online AVI reports have been developed to suit the needs of AVI Accredited Consultants.
The Minessence Group Key Affiliate's team are currently exploring the concept of transforming the Minessence Group into a Co-op. Let us know if you are interested in being involved.

Relationship AVI

Gunther Weil or Values Mentors and myself have collaborated to produce a new online version of the Relationship Development report.

At request from clients, any two people can be selected from the values-database and the values they share, and don't share, identified.

The report is based on the work pf William Glasser. Glasser suggests: to live a fulfilling life, we should spend quality time together living the values we share and quality time apart living the values we do not share. The VMRVI (Value Mentors Relationship Values Inventory) makes it easy for two people in a relationship to follow Glassers relationship-centric pathway to a fulfilling life.

This makes it easier to find what you are looking for as labels are used as category headings or as key-word identification.

Increased Feedback Security

An Internet promotional site managed to send out multiple emails to me via the feedback/contact form at www.minessence.net. Our security has now been upgraded and people now need to enter in a verification code before the form can be submitted.
